Avishai Cohen’s Triveni Trio, The Vortex

A chance to get up-close and personal with the international jazz scene's most exciting newcomer, don't miss this Vortex Avishai Cohen concert, London, 2014.

Avishai Cohen’s Triveni Trio, The Vortex
One of the most exciting trumpet players on the international jazz scene, voted a Rising Star in DownBeat magazine’s 2012 Critics Poll, Avishai Cohen brings his Triveni Trio to the Vortex ahead of the release of Dark Nights, their keenly awaited third album.
Not to be confused with the bassist of the same name, Cohen was born and raised in Israel before moving to America aged 18 to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. A prolific sideman, he regularly features in the lineup of the celebrated Mingus Big Band and has worked with a host of famous names, including saxophonist Mark Turner, on whose 2014 release Lathe of Heaven he appears. Born into a musical family, Cohen also tours as part of The 3 Cohens Sextet with sister Anat and brother Yuval, but it’s his work with the Triveni trio, a contemporary outfit featuring drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Omer Avital (replaced by Yoni Zelnik for this UK date), that has won him the greatest acclaim.
Placing improvisation at the forefront and tip toeing the line between traditional and free, the trio provides the perfect setting for Cohen’s rough-edged sound, bluesy phrasing and anarchic, somersaulting lines. Both of their previous releases, Introducing Triveni (2010) and Triveni II (2012), were outstanding, featuring Cohen originals and bold reworkings of classics by jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Ornette Coleman. Dark Nights looks set to bring more of the same, making this rare UK appearance unmissable.
