Mark Lanegan Band, Shepherd's Bush Empire

A tour in celebration of the new album from Mark Lanegan, 'Phantom Radio' 2014

Mark Lanegan by Steve Gullick
With the help of his band, bearded American devil Mark Lanegan is bringing his new album Phantom Radio to Shepherd’s Bush Empire in January.

That voice...
With a voice that sounds he’s been dragged across stony ground as part of a neo-pagan ritual, as well as the best hand tattoos in the business, Lanegan personifies Rock 'n' Roll.

Softer Side
Don’t let the gruffness fool you, though. Lanegan is more than capable of producing beautiful music. The lilting twang of Flatlands, from 2013’s Imitations finds Lanegan in American West mode, singing in search of romantic and natural simplicity: his delivery elegantly captures the rough diamond nature of both the landscape and its familiar characters. His collaborations with pixie-voiced Belle and Sebastian vocalist Isobel Campbell (2004's album Time Is Just The Same and Ballad of the Broken Seas in 2007) proved he was just a big softie, after all.

Collaborations
His collaboration with heavy rockers Queens of the Stone Age, though, demonstrate a harder side: he worked with them on five albums, including Rated R and Songs for the Deaf. One of his most mesmeric efforts is the opening to Lullabies to Paralyze (2005) with This Lullaby - an unnerving, twisting piece of graveyard folk.

New record
New song, Harvest Home, from his forthcoming record Phantom Radio, sees him firmly back in rock’n’roll territory: “Now black is a colour / Black is my name / I need something to help me chase the devil away” Underpinned by a warped country sound, this track is an atmospheric appetiser for the album.
