Joshua Redman with Gwilym Simcock & Wolfgang Muthspiel, Wigmore Hall

American saxophonist Joshua Redman is joined by pianist Gwilym Simcock and guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel for one of the more exciting collaborations London has to offer

Joshua Redman with Gwilym Simcock & Wolfgang Muthspiel, Wigmore Hall
The prodigiously talented Joshua Redman boasts a CV that reads like a roll-call of modern jazz greats, and is frequently hailed as one of the most gifted saxophonists of his generation. At home in any style, his playing can be tender and sophisticated, bluesy and staunchly traditional, or fiery and free.
Renowned for his restless invention and lightness of touch, Austrian-born Wolfgang Muthspiel is of similarly high calibre,  he’s perhaps lesser known in the UK. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, he went on to replace Pat Metheny as the guitarist in the Gary Burton Quintet , and now regularly collaborates with the likes of Brian Blade, Paul Motion and Larry Grenadier.
A leading light of the European jazz scene and one of the most exciting pianists to emerge in the last decade, Gwilym Simcock is equally varied. Sought after as both a composer and a performer, and described by none other than Chick Corea as a "creative genius" , his classical training has equipped him with astonishing technique while his contemporary approach to harmony and groove has already spawned numerous imitators.
It will be fascinating to see how these three greats come together and, unless you’re planning a trip to Colmar in eastern France on 12 September, it may be your only chance to do so. With no future appearances on the cards, this collaboration could prove to be a one-off.
