Michel Legrand & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Festival Hall

The champion of chanson is back: Michel Legrand brings his award-winning film scores to London this autumn

Michel Legrand & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Few musicians have stood the test of time like Michel Legrand. At 86, he's an amazingly fleet-fingered performer, and his almost inexhaustible repertoire of film and musical scores continues to have a widespread appeal to this day. Career highlights include his soundtracks to wildly successful The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort, which both still feel as fresh and rawly powerful as they did when they were originally composed.

It comes as little surprise, then, that he's taking to the stage again this September. He'll be performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, playing to the backdrop of some gorgeous film clips and accompanied by a series of world-class special guests.

Having racked up three Oscars, seven Grammys and a litany of Academy Award nominations, Legrand's claim to fame is unparalleled. Over the years, he's worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Sting, Barbara Streisand and Phil Woods – to reel off just a few of his extensive collaborations – and is renowned for soundtracking a radical new form of cinema during the 1950s and 60s, French New Wave.

Fans can expect a trailblazing showreel of Legrand's greatest scores, from the bittersweet yearning of Summer of '42 to the flowering intensity of I Will Wait for You. The performance will also be surveying the entirety of his career, marking '60 years of music and movies', so expect the full range of Legrand's output, from scat, soul and swing to jazz, classical and blues.

With no less than seven decades of composition under his belt, both on and off screen, Legrand's enduring commitment to the stage gives a new meaning to the phrase the show must go on...
