Angel Olsen is a torchbearer for modern folk and country, beloved by old timers as by younger, more indie-leaning crowds. For those who haven’t followed her rise to fame (or at least critical acclaim), here’s a quick primer.

Having recorded and toured with the legendary Will Oldham, Angel released her debut Half Way Home in 2012. This collection of spare, yearning balladry was followed by Burn Your Fire For No Witness, a slightly scuzzier, overdriven affair. But whatever the instrumentation, the main draw remains Angel’s voice. At times she warbles like Emmylou Harris; at others, she whispers like Sibylle Baier.

But these references don’t do just to the originality of her sound. Just as well, then, that she’s got a London show lined up. On October 17, she plays KOKO in support of her new album My Woman. If lead single ‘Intern’ is anything to go by, synths are the latest addition to her palette. Watch the trailer video below:
