Best new restaurants: London, April 2023

All eyes on Battersea and Clapham this month, as south-west London delivers two of April's most exciting restaurant openings

Ploussard, Clapham

They won us over with fancy fried chicken at their first joint venture Other Side Fried, now hospitality duo Matt Harris (also The Parlour) and Tommy Kempton are broadening their repertoire, opening a neighbourhood restaurant and natural wine bar in Clapham Junction. Menu highlights include Tunworth croquettes with burnt onion mayonnaise; lamb and anchovy crumpets; and a dessert of burnt bay custard tart with poached rhubarb.

Story Cellar, Covent Garden

It's all about the French delicacy of rotisserie chicken at this new opening from two Michelin-starred chef Tom Sellers, of Restaurant Story acclaim. Bringing Parisian brasserie vibes to the picturesque location of Neal's Yard in Covent Garden, the restaurant will be more casual than its lauded sibling, paying as much attention to a list of fine wines as the dishes.

Boudica, Battersea

A compromise for foodies and their more aesthetically minded peers: chef Luigi Vairo, formerly of Corrigan's in Mayfair, is heading up the kitchen at this suave opening, hoping to suck up some of the human traffic visiting Battersea Power Station. His menu will focus on home-grown produce, serving dishes that sound distinctly British (salt-baked celeriac and marinated Welsh lamb cutlets are in the opening line-up), while promising to borrow from international influences too. Instagrammers will also be catered for, with plenty of woodland foliage and mood lighting to spruce up their snaps.
