Thai and Lao Street Food, Boxpark Shoreditch
Boxpark Mall in Shoreditch certainly wouldn’t win prizes for aesthetic appeal, although the shipping container-made mall might get some recognition in an eco design category. What would win prizes, however, are some of the residents of Boxpark's shipping containers – and our favourite the Thai and Lao Street Food cafe – possibly the best Thai restaurant in Shoreditch for flavour and simplicity.
Taking a no nonsense approach to the name of the business and in the kitchen, this little simple joint does exactly what you would expect: South East Asian food - and brilliantly.
A family run operation that has been feeding east London for 12 years, the onus here is on food cooked fresh to order and no gimmicks. Take your pick from three elements – a protein, a flavour (spicy basil is ace) and a starch (either rice or noodles), and decide if you fancy a soup, a stir-fry or a curry. It’s that easy, and your bespoke dish will be whizzed up in front of you in minutes.
It's vibe is basic and unpretentious: stools, cash only and a massive wok. You can sit indoors or out (there are heaters and umbrellas).
