Po' Boys, Vauxhall: London Pop Up with a flavour of the Mississippi [STAR:3]
Po' Boys Pop Up, London Vauxhall
Bringing the French Quarter to an industrial yard, the brains behind New Orleans sensations Po’ Boys, Morwenna Armstrong and Gemma Taylor, have set up a festive summer supperclub running on selected Fridays and Saturdays until 27 September, where London’s communal eating scene meets Louisiana.
Review ★★★★★
Arriving at 7, revellers can expect a themed welcome cocktail and five course meal accompanied by a relaxed, versatile soundtrack. If you're expecting a jazz-heavy experience you might be disappointed, but the music is perky eclectic and the atmosphere vibrant – tucked away behind a set of heavy wooden doors, the yard has the vibe of a neighbourhood street party, replete with exposed brick, wrought iron, and candlelit sharing tables.
On the menu
Starter nibbles of bread and of chipotle butter aren't the most thrilling, but the jalapeño panko poppers which follow are fun – a game of spice roulette, presented with innovation and stuffed with cheese opens the five-course meal. Don't be concerned, though, these don't have much of a kick to them and suit even the most wimpish of palates.
Next up are Bubba Gemski’s potted shrimps, served, appropriately, with some memorable Forrest Gump references, followed by a main of ribs – which are probably the best thing on the menu. Marinated in Dr Pepper sauce, Po' Boys ribs contribute heavily to the messy state of your hands by the end of the meal. They could, however, have done with an accompaniment of sorts – and the experience becomes slightly homogenous.
Next up there's a classic Gumbo, a hearty stew that's well-presented, and then dessert, which is appropriately sloppy – Po' Boys' Mud Pies, chocolate cake slathered in chocolate sauce and a bourbon coffee to finish.
Whilst this isn't foodie heaven, we've no doubt you'll be impressed by the efforts of the staff to immerse guests in this lovely, laid back venue, and the communal atmosphere with fellow diners makes the evening a delight.
Certainly a fun, entertaining way to pass an evening, a beautiful atmosphere, tasty food that's creatively presented – if you're after an authentic Jazz evening, this may not the place for you (try here) but it's so atmospheric we reckon you'll still be able to hear the sounds of the Mississippi.
