Saltoun Supper Club, Brixton

Supperclubs are fast becoming the coolest restaurants in London to relax at on a weekday evening. Arno Maasdorp's Saltoun Supper Club is no exception.

From his elegant Brixton flat, South African born Arno Maasdorp has been quietly cooking up a storm with his weekly Saltoun Supper Club. Having tired of generic offerings in mainstream restaurants, Maasdorp decided to open up his home and do things his own way. Now, twice a week, he prepares seasonal ingredients with extraordinary care and precision, providing guests with four sumptuous courses, as well as petits-four and coffee.
A fine artist, Maasdorp applies the formal elements from art to his food, paying careful attention to colour, texture and composition. He is also a successful food stylist and photographer, and his beautifully prepared dishes show off these skills. His quirky flat is a feast for the eyes, too, and worth a visit in its own right, with unusual objects displayed on the walls throughout.
One aspect of Saltoun Supper Club that will make a lasting impression is Maasdorp’s firm belief in hospitality; he is careful to take the time to speak to each of his guests, and ensure they feel at home.
Now in its fifth year, the word is out on Maasdorp’s brilliance, so there is often a waiting list of a couple of months. Make sure you book well in advance to avoid disappointment, and follow his Facebook page for last minute cancellations.
