Jan restaurant, Battersea

Brightly coloured, fragrant Middle Eastern food shines on into 2017: Jan has opened on Battersea's Northcote Road

Jan restaurant, Battersea
Jan is open now for lunch and dinner on Battersea's Northcote Road. Here, we celebrate the unsung flavours of the Caspian.

Lots of London restaurant kitchens are celebrating the Middle East - but what about the flavours of the Caspian? The jury's still out about whether the Caspian Sea is actually a sea, or the world's largest lake - either way, the landlocked Caspian has the cuisines of Iran, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Russia to thank for its unique fusion of flavours.

JAN, (the restaurant's affectionate URL, myjan.co.uk, is a rather sweet turn) has taken inspiration from the Caspian to deliver dishes like charred miso and tahini spiced cauliflower, sticky sumac chicken wings, lamb kofta skewer with pomegranate molasses and a rare beef salad with charred leeks.

Dishes will take inspiration from flavour combinations so far unseen on London turf. And cocktails will incorporate tea, as a main focus, with fragrant use of spices and fresh fruit - expect plenty of pomegranate and melon to prevail on the list in unusual ways. There's carrot caramel and bay leaf honey syrup.

Few facts exist about the shape and look of the restaurant and its menu, but we wouldn't be aghast if JAN was a brightly coloured looker of a restaurant, with sharing plates, and open all day.
