Design, film, National Theatre Encore relays, street art and an eye-filling new installation are just some of the events on offer in Summer of Play, a curated season of cultural activities for residents of, and visitors to the Wembley Park area.

An ambitious, colourful installation by the London artist Remi Rough, Flight is a dazzling calling card for Summer of Play. An especially commissioned, site-specific work, it appropriates Wembley Park’s perhaps most easily identifiable feature – the arch that rises above the stadium – as the background against which visitors view a design that cleverly takes shape as you approach.

Design is a key part of Summer of Play, and among the various activities on offer we would highlight the So Last Century Vintage and Retro fair with mid-century pieces on sale side by side with work created in Wembley Park’s recently set up artists’ studios.

If the good weather holds – and forecasts say it will! – why not make your way to the Arena Square where you can watch Encore broadcasts of some of the National Theatre's most popular plays while reclining on deck chairs – and for free!?

For fans of film as an exuberant display of colour, singing and dancing there will be a season of Bollywood blockbusters, appropriately called Bollywood Nights; and fans of the band Queen will be treated to screenings of seminal moments in the band’s life, marking the return to SSE Arena Wembley of Queen’s current iteration featuring Adam Lambert on vocals.

Summer of Play includes Summer of Movement (parkour displays, anybody?), Summer of Making, featuring creative workshops, and the Mayor of London’s International Busking Day, which relocates to Wembley Park from Trafalgar Square. And note, too, that there will be plenty of fun activities for children.

These are just some of the myriad of events that make up Summer of Play – the cultural element of a £3 billion, 85 acre redevelopment in NW London, that includes a new theatre, affordable artists studios, 7,500 new homes and London’s largest Boxpark to date.
