RSC Shakespeare on Screen, Barbican
This January the Barbican presents a retrospective season of RSC productions of Shakespeare captured on screen.

The Barbican Cinema have announced a special film programme to complement the Barbican's current season of King and Country plays.
The film season, entitled 'Shakespeare on Screen', will consist of a selection of screenings from the RSC archive of notable Shakespeare productions captured on film.
Highlights will include Trevor Nunn’s iconic Macbeth starring Ian McKellen and Judi Dench, from a 1979 Stratford-Upon-Avon production. Also to be screened are Gregory Doran’s 2009 Hamlet, with David Tennant in the titular role and Mariah Gale as Ophelia. Reconceived for television the popular production was filmed on location in an abandoned North London seminary.
Elsewhere the season will feature Peter Hall’s 1959 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with Charles Laughton as Bottom, and Peter Brook's incredibly divisive 1961 production of King Lear.
A rare opportunity to catch some of the most iconic and talked about productions of Shakespeare, curated from fifty years of Shakespare in performance, this is a must for seasoned Shakespeareans looking for a new opportunity to revisit theatre history. RSC artistic director Gregory Doran will also be on hand after a number of screenings to discuss the challenges of translating stage to screen, and the season will potentially feature live appearances from RSC veterans Vanessa Redgrave and Janet Suzman.
