Extravaganza of literature and music back for 2015: Port Eliot Festival returns to Cornwall.

There are picturesque locations, and then there’s Port Eliot. Set in balmy Cornwall, the gloriously archaic manor house is surrounded by Grade I-listed gardens, a babbling river and a viaduct built by Brunel himself. Few places in the country could provide a better background for a weekend of stimulating conversation and music.

Port Eliot was originally a literary festival, and books still form the cornerstone of its line-up. Among the speakers, poet Simon Armitage and novelist Sarah Waters will be joined by Alan Johnson MP, the Booker-shortlisted Neel Mukherjee, journalist Rachel Cooke and dozens more.

But insightful talks are not all that Port Eliot has to offer. A well-curated programme of musical acts will perform in the estate’s numerous bucolic venues. Although there is a definite focus towards folk, with the likes of The Unthanks, Villagers, Will Varley and Marika Hackman playing, the selection is more eclectic than ever. DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall promises inspire dance, while the bluesy Archie Bronson Outfit and ‘Ethiopian White Stripes’ will bring the rock.
With all this on offer, plus outdoor activities, food workshops and family events, Port Eliot looks to be the perfect weekend away.
