Sample Sale: Issey Miyake
Say goodbye to trawling through London's vintage shops. Here is an opportunity to pick up some gems from a designer that shuns the past and looks consistently to the future. Indeed, Issey Miyake is one of the first designers to consider fashion in terms of design as opposed to clothing. Born in Hiroshima, he was first inspired by two bridges in his home town - to live and to die - which were situated near the epicenter of where the Atomic Bomb hit. Having realised the capacity of design to carry an emotional weight, he studied at the Faculty of Graphic Design at Tama Art University in 1960, before moving to Paris to study Haute Couture in 1965.
Miyake's designs are consistently innovative; throughout his career he has pushed the boundaries of design, employing new technology to create idiosyncratic pieces. Yet in spite of the machinery used to power his brand - which includes the revolutionary A-POC  - his clothes remain effortlessly feminine. His line 'PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE' is the perfect example of this delicacy.
The forthcoming sample sale is a wonderful way to participate in the legacy of this vastly influential designer. In the meantime, wander over to the new, achingly beautiful store that opened this weekend at 10 Brook Street.
