This is Christmas entertainment for the kids with a unique twist. Southwark Playhouse presents Usagi Yojimbo, the adventures of a 17th century Japanese rabbit lifted from Stan Sakai’s comic book series onto the stage for the first time.
The literal translation of Usagi Yojimbo is ‘rabbit bodyguard’ and the main character, Miyamoto Usagi, is a samurai rabbit based on a real life Japanese swordsman. As young Usagi travels the land on a samurai’s pilgrimage, his adventures combine fighting magical creatures with pottery and kite-craft to make plentiful reference to Japanese folklore and history. These educational efforts earned Sakai’s comic series a Parent’s Choice Award and Usagi was named the 31st greatest comic book character by Empire Magazine in 2006.
This production will mark the 30th anniversary of Sakai’s successful comic book character by combining the rabbit's adventures into one epic saga, adapted for the stage by writer Stewart Melton. Usagi Yojimbo will combine live music and video elements and to create an exciting cultural alternative to panto, so why not treat the family to something new and intriguing this Christmas?
