Iittala - Issey Miyake Home Collection

Japan and Finland may be located on different sides of the planet, but when it comes to design their love for functionality and minimalism are strikingly similar.

Issey Miyake and Iitalla’s new home collection for design shop Aria is the latest episode in the love story between Japanese and Finnish creativity. The designers’ new line will include tableware, glassware, various cushions and bags and make use of all of the high-end technology behind Miyake’s innovative, at times gravity-defying shapes and materials. Expect futuristic and functional lines, candy colours and a touch of Iitalla’s modernistic glassware. We're particularly intrigued by the collection's origami-like napkins, which looks like a bird about to take off.

Born in Hiroshima, Issey Miyake has sought throughout his career to create forward-looking design in an effort to break with his city’s tragic past. His line “Pleats please” made up of polyester clothes impossible to crease, is one of the creator's pièces de résistance and will be one of the main sources of inspiration for 'Iitalla X Issey Miyake'. For its part, Iitala has enjoyed a long tradition of producing Scandinavian glassware since its origin as a glass manufacturer, with iconic creations including the glass birds by Toikka.
