Suvlaki, Soho ★★★★

Greek street food meets sharp contemporary design in the new Suvlaki restaurant in Soho

Suvlaki, Front Entrance
Trailblazing Greek designer Afroditi Krassa is the brains behind the aesthetic of the new Athenian grill house, Suvlaki in Soho, inspired by the traditional and loved 'hole in the wall' grill houses of Athens. Having worked with Dishoom and Heston Blumenthal, Krassa has made her mark in hospitality design since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2002.
Suvlaki, Soho
Former city trader Yannis Theodorakakos has created an intimate and lively space which brings the vitality and openess of the Mediterranean to the heart of central London. Very of the moment, this fast, healthy and delicious brand of innovative Greek dishes has taken Soho by storm.
What's on the Suvlaki menu?
Step inside this cosy hotspot and you'll be delighted by the succulent smells of grilled meat and Fix lager. The menu offers the full range of traditional greek souvlaki options with a London twist. First timers should try the wild boar skewers, wraps and traditional salads, whilst loyal followers will enjoy the Suvlaki Exuberance - a sharing platter which encompasses the whole menu, from oregano chips and baked feta to the pita burger and mini suvlaki wraps. Service is friendly and attentive and the food is bang on the money; warm, filling and excellently seasoned. As summer draws to a close, this will be the ultimate place to while away a winter's night.
The design
Afroditi Krassa worked closely with Theodorakakos to craft the design of the restaurant, inspired by the metropolitan atmosphere of Soho and Greek tradition. In collaboration with one of Athens' most popular street artists, the exterior takes its cue from the satirical graffiti that has been branded across the capital since World War II. Step inside and witty, sharp graffiti brings continuity to the restaurant, which is is filled with the rhythms of warm, inky blue and acidic turquoise. The delicious meat souvlaki takes prime position with the grill at the centre of the space, surrounded by gorgeous AKollection Pentagon Pendant lamps and a huge communal table, designed for a classic Greek family meal.
Contemporary and sharp design, alongside a classic understanding of Greek food and culture, this Greek taverna is like no other.
