The celebration of design this September during the London Design Festival extends to Sir John Soane’s Museum with a new pop-up exhibition of international designs that respond to the historic house. Managing Director, Xanthe Arvanitakis explains, ‘this exhibition truly reflects Soane’s multi-faceted architectural legacy and we are absolutely thrilled to be presenting Space and Light during London Design Festival. To showcase these 21st Century creations within Soane’s 18th Century home is a wonderful contribution to this year’s LDF from these very talented designers.’
With Soane sometimes referred to as the ‘master of space and light’, acclaimed designers Paul Schütze, Ab Rogers, Sebastian Bergne and Tiipoi have created objects that fittingly place emphasis on the use of light and shadow.
The most intriguing project comes from new design brand Tiipoi, which uses an ancient family secret from Kerala in Southern India to create the largest ever Aranmula mirror at 55 cm in measure. The mirror makers polish the surface for many days to a thickness of only 3mm to create a uniquely flawless reflective finish.
Antonio Cardillo’s MIN lamp, an arch shaped sculpture that has been carefully crafted from a single shard of mineral, is also worth a mention for its incredible innovation. Similarly minutely delicate craftsmanship comes from interior designers Mineheart who have somehow managed to fit a tiny gold chandelier in a normal light bulb.
Over to multi-disciplinary artist Schütze, a series of limited edition photographic prints of the Soane Museum’s interiors illuminated by the London night sky are available for purchase. Other moments of joyful creative invention can be found in architect Ab Rogers’ new kinetic LED light and Sebastian Bergne’s sculptural lamp which is inspired by comic books and cartoons.
