Yorke Dance Project, Lilian Baylis Studio

Revivals of masterworks by Kenneth Macmillan and Robert Cohan feature alongside three new pieces in Yorke Dance Project’s Rewind Forward at Sadler’s Wells Lilian Baylis Studio

Yorke Dance Project is a young touring contemporary ballet company under the artistic direction of Yolande Yorke-Edgell.
Her approach retains a deep physical understanding of contemporary dance’s origins, while inspiring her seven dynamic dancers to dive into uncharted choreographic waters.

Rewind Forward perfectly illustrates this ethos by paying tribute to the past and offering insights into where today’s terpsichorean talent is taking us.

Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s rarely-seen Sea of Troubles (1988) was intended for smaller venues, making this restaging for the Lilian Baylis Studio very fitting. Sea of Troubles contains nine intense scenes exploring Hamlet’s psychological state after his father’s death.

Robert Cohan CBE’s 1976 Nympheas is a lyrical piece inspired by Monet’s waterlilies and set to Debussy’s piano music.
At 90-years-old, Cohan’s creativity shows no sign of slowing down. The fusion of old and new in this programme begins with the London premiere of his new duet Lacrymosa. Set to music by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, it depicts the loss and return of a loved one.

Charlotte Edmonds, at 19, is one of today’s brightest young dance-makers. Chosen by Yorke Dance Project in 2014 as their Young Choreographer in Residence – and currently The Royal Ballet’s Young Choreographer - her new piece for Rewind Forward is inspired by the famous trio from MacMillan’s Manon.

The programme concludes with the London premiere of Yolande York-Edgell’s Untethered. Choreographed to music by string quartet Brooklyn Rider, Untethered is a work about self-discovery, letting go and transformation.
