T.H.E. Dance Company: PheNoumenon, The Coronet Theatre

As we become more and more immersed in the digital age, while continuing to burn up the planet’s resources, how has our relationship changed with the nature surrounding us? Such is the subject of PheNoumenon by Singapore-based dance troupe The Human Expression Dance Company (T.H.E).

The show, which receives its UK premiere at Notting Hill’s Coronet Theatre this February, invites viewers to step directly into the narrative between man and nature. It questions: at a time when our sense of the world is rapidly evolving and changing, fuelled by technology and greed, what restraints have been imposed and how can we transcend them?

T.H.E. is one of Singapore’s leading contemporary dance companies. Founded in 2008 by current artistic director and principal choreographer Swee Boon Kuik (2011’s As It Fades, 2015’s Above 40), the group’s work is recognisable for its unrelenting energy and its dancers’ use of their bodies as a conduit for channeling the emotions of the human condition.

How? Since 2016, Kuik has taught his dancers in the company’s signature methodology, ‘HollowBody’, in order to help them access their deepest instincts and impulses through movement. The conditions the company explores through its work aim to mirror the issues and rhythms of contemporary life.
