Dundee-based Scottish Dance Theatre is a 12-strong ensemble committed to performing high energy, cutting edge work, always with a touch of club culture to it.

Described by the Dancing Times as ‘lively, quirky and confident,’ the company commissions work from international choreographers, as well as outstanding artists in the fields of music, design and the visual arts.

And so it is with the double bill Scottish Dance Theatre is currently touring, which will reach The Place in London for a one off show this autumn.

The Israeli choreographer Emanuel Gat created The Circle specifically for Scottish Dance Theatre. It tells the story of 12 individuals; or, in Gat’s own words: ‘The Circle celebrates each dancer as an individual and their own unique dance language, whilst also telling the story of this collective and the relationships contained within it.”

Visually, The Circle is a startling combination of dancing and wearable art (see the intriguing picture up top) driven by a hypnotic score by the electronic musician, Squarepusher.

The first piece in the programme comes from the award-winning choreographic duo, Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar.

Eyal and Behar’s work has become familiar to London audiences over the past few years through their collaborations with Sadler’s Wells and Rambert, as well as performances by Eyal’s own company L-E-V.

Entitled Process Day, Scottish Dance Theatre premiered this piece in Edinburgh just over three years ago. Like most of Eyal/Behar’s work, it is set to a pulsating techno beat scored by Ori Lichtik. On a dark stage, human torsos and limbs emerge, seemingly disembodied, with what The Guardian reviewer described as “powerful intent and skilful performance.”

On past experience, this double bill by Scottish Dance Company is bound to be exciting and memorable.
