Rambert Summer Livestream 2021

Rambert live-streams two new works, Eye Candy and Rouge, in its third programme of dance for the screen conceived during lockdown

While dance audiences were deprived of live performance in theatres during the Covid-19 lockdown, Rambert came up with a daring new approach: live performance created specifically for the screen. Its first live-streamed programme, Draw From Within, was followed by Rooms, both breaking new ground in dance, live-streamed in real time.

Now Rambert brings us the third programme of the series: its Summer Livestream 2021, consisting of two works, both performed and filmed live in Rambert's studios in the Southbank and streamed in real time on the company's digital platform, Rambert Home Studios.

The first piece of the programme is the world premiere of Eye Candy by the choreographer siblings Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal. This will be their first work outside their home company, Nederlands Dans Theater.

Set to music by the Israeli-born, Netherlands-based composer Amos Ben-Tal, and designed by the van Opstals themselves, Eye Candy challenges viewers to consider their relationship with their own bodies and the bodies of others, as well as trying to understand how the cameras ever more present in public spaces affect the way in which they view their bodies.

The second piece of the programme is a reworking of Marion Motin's hugely successful Rouge, which premiered as a stage work at Sadler's Wells a couple of years ago. French choreographer Marion Motin is best know for her work with Christine and the Queens, as well as her video for Dua Lipa's IDGAF.

Based on the movement and rhythms of hip-hop translated into an infectious score by Micka Luna, Rouge's reworking for the screen gives both dancers and choreographer an opportunity to explore different spaces within the Rambert building, thus, in Motin's own words, 'bringing the audiences into a new dimension.'

If the previous two shows of this series are anything to go by, this, too, should be a thrilling viewing experience.
