If you are looking for a sumptuous big-scale ballet to see this January, then the Royal Opera House production of Giselle is a safe bet. This is the quintessential romantic ballet. First staged in the height of the Romantic era for the Imperial Ballet in 1884, Marius Petipa’s choreography has been the ‘go to’ version for over a century and is now considered to be a real classic.
The lead dancers will change between nights. For the cream of the ballet crop, the evenings which see ballet superstar Carlos Acosta paired with Russian ballerina extraordinaire Natalia Osipova will be unmissable, undoubtedly some of the top Royal Ballet performances 2014. Osipova, a former principal at the Bolshoi, has just joined the Royal Ballet this year. She is known for her thrilling versatility and her appointment has been a bit of a coup for Covent Garden. Tickets for those prized performances will be hard to get so be at the ready on the booking morning.
Théophile Gautier’s libretto tells the tale of peasant girl Giselle who falls in love with Count Albrecht, disguised as a villager named Loys. When she discovers his true identity, chaos ensues and the story gets interesting for the second act with supernatural spirits - we won’t give too much away. This production is choreographed by Sir Peter Wright, whose staging of the ballet is considered unsurpassed.
Ballets at the Royal Opera House tend to sell out fairly quickly, so we recommend purchasing your tickets on the day that booking lines open. Acosta and Osipova are performing the lead roles on 18, 22 and 27 January. For this production, the general booking opens on 22 October at 10am. It’s worth becoming a friend of the Royal Opera House so you can book your tickets as early as mid September, to avoid disappointment and get the perfect seat.
