Acosta Danza is Carlos Acosta’s new and much-cherished project, and will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the Sadler’s Wells programme for 2017.

At the programme’s launch Acosta spoke with passion, pride and intelligence about Acosta Danza. Launched in the Cuban capital of Havana mid-2016, it brings together a wide range of young Cuban dancers. Its aim, according to Acosta himself, is to create “a unique company, with a different look and a distinct repertoire.”

Stressing that “authenticity is the key,” he said inspiration for Acosta Danza would come primarily from the richness of Cuba's history and culture, its music and racial diversity.

This is not, however, yet another folk-based company. On the contrary, what Acosta has done was bring together a group of dancers whose talent and training ranges from purely classical to completely contemporary and everything in between.

As Acosta himself put it, “there will be pointe shoes alongside bare feet.”

Choreographers, be they Cuban or invited foreign artists, will be asked to use all those resources to create works which will define and enhance what Acosta envisages will be a “unique brand,” but still using a choreographic language that be will recognisable to dance lovers.

At the same time, he is intent on developing the choreographic talents of his own dancers, and has already spotted two young members of Acosta Danza who show promise as future choreographers.

It is, Carlos Acosta notes, a long-term project. Realising his vision for this company "is going to take time."

The debut programme of Acosta Danza will include work by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, as well as Spanish choreographer Goyo Montego and Cuban choreographer Marianela Boan.

And Acosta himself will perform.
