Hofesh Shechter - Sun, Sadler's Wells

London-based Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter is definitely the man to rave about on the contemporary dance scene...

Hofesh Shechter - Sun, Sadler's Wells
London-based young Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter is returning to Sadler’s Wells with his most recent work, Sun, which premiered here last year.
Shechter is one of the UK's most exciting contemporary artists, whose talent for both choreography and highly-charged music scores has won him a keen following. This latest project follows his hugely acclaimed first full-length show Political Mother (2010) and matches its raw, visceral energy beat for beat.
This said, Sun marks a departure from the characteristic darkness of Shechter’s previous work. Beefed up by a familiarly thunderous percussive score – written by Shechter himself – Sun is a piece which celebrates vitality through the dynamic synchronicity of its 16 dancers’ movements, and it’s bathed, quite literally, in a more optimistic light than we’ve come to associate with Shechter. However, don't be deceived by the sunny exterior: a discomfort lingers not far beneath the surface.
Sadler’s Wells artistic director Alistair Spalding himself has been said to remark that the glowing bright-white stage setting does as much to draw in the audience as the choreography itself.
The booking page tells us to beware that this show may feature very loud music so brace yourselves for an explosive event.
These performances at Sadler's Wells are part of a nationwide tour. Sun will open the Brighton Festival (3-4 May), where Shechter is guest director for 2014.
