This November at Sadler's Wells three of the world’s greatest choreographers - Edwaard Liang, Russell Maliphant and Christopher Wheeldon - join forces for a unique British/Chinese collaboration fusing classical, modern and contemporary ballet.
Having premiered in Beijing last year to great acclaim, this is an ambitious cross-cultural experiment featuring a truly rich blend of styles. We’re particularly looking forward to seeing China’s most famous ballerina YuanYuan Tan dance Edwaard Liang’s Finding Light with her co-principal dancer at the San Francisco Ballet, Damian Smith.
If you were lucky enough to see Russell Maliphant in Sylvie Guillem’s PUSH, you’ll have a pretty good idea why he’s a favourite of ours. He’s presenting a new solo work, Present Past, created especially for the uniquely gritty style of the Taiwanese soloist Fang-Yi Sheu. His good friend and genius Michael Hull will be in charge of the lighting design.
Meanwhile, Christopher Wheeldon’s Five Movements, Three Repeats, will be performed by four dancers to the modern minimalist music of rising star composer Max Richter, whose work has drawn recent comparisons to that of Philip Glass. Wheeldon, whose fame extends far beyond British shores, is throwing in an extra bonus work, After the Rain, a sensual dance to the music of composer Arvo Pärt.
