Cas Public: Symphonie Dramatique, Linbury Studio ROH

A Québécois dance reading of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet comes to the Linbury Studio.

Symphonie Dramatique
Québécois dance company Cas Public is internationally renowned for its unusual and unexpected choreographies underpinned by detailed research and collective development work amongst their dancers.
Founded in 1989 by contemporary dancer and choreographer Hélène Blackburn, Cas Public is made up of eight fine dancers, all possessed of a strong grounding in classical ballet. Pointe shoes are a requisite.
They dance works of strong physicality and genuine theatrical insight focused on the human condition in all its infinite variety; and Blackburn is interested also in exploring the role of the artist in society.

This September Cas Public brings Symphonie Dramatique, its adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, to the Royal Opera House’s Linbury studio.
Intended as an homage to the original tale – perhaps the best known love story of all time – Symphonie Dramatique draws on the impetus and vigour of contemporary dance to achieve a vibrant and fresh narrative.
The themes of seduction, desire, unstoppable love and death are played out over a soundtrack created by composer and sampler Martin Tétreault splicing together music by Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Gounod among others.
The piece also includes spoken interludes where extracts from Shakespeare’s play are spoken by actor Marc-André Poliquin
Cas Public’s Symphonie Dramatique was created for audiences aged 10 and above.
