Trygve Wakenshaw must be absolutely exhausted after this year; his solo show Kraken picked up awards and nominations from all sides, and has been touring Europe and Australasia ever since. But he’s summoning up the energy to bring this piece, named after a legendary sea-creature, to surface again in London this January.
It’s no surprise that he’s been compared to outlandish physical comedian Dr Brown, as they are both graduates of the clown school of Philippe Gaulier. This ageing cult figure is loved and hated in equal measure by all who train with him, most notoriously Sacha Baron-Cohen, who blames this guru for characters such as Ali-G and Borat.
Wakenshaw has developed in a more physical direction, meaning that he is presented in January as part of the London International Mime Festival. But don't expect any white gloves or pierrot make-up on this performer! Expect the unexpected, look forward to animals and bizarre and embarrassing situations brought to life with the smallest of gestures, the utmost skill and greatest humour. Soho Theatre specialise in bringing us the weird and wonderful, and Kraken is right at the very top of this bill.
