Paula Quintana, Las Alegrías, Coronet Theatre

The Coronet Theatre continues its experimental programming with the UK premiere of Paula Quintana's Las Alegrías (The Joys), a one-hour piece described as a choreographic installation.

The Spanish performer Paula Quintana uses her formation in ballet, contemporary dance and flamenco to develop her own style, which she puts at the service of philosophical exploration, in this case of Joy as a transformative 'inner place'.

Winner of the Réplica Award for Best Interpretation in her natal Canary Islands, Quintana´s Las Alegrías is a solo performed on water under the shadow of a suspended meteorite, to a score that combines Óscar Villegas's sound design with the texts of feminist writer and activist Roy Galán. Judging by this trailer, its unhurried movement is quite hypnotic.

Whether Quintana can sustain interest for a whole hour we'll have to wait and see. Described as a multidisciplinary spectacle, Las Alegrías also includes video by Tamara Brito de Heer. Dramaturgy is by Javier Cuevas.
