New Art Club is the artistic name of the duo Pete Shenton and Tom Roden, pioneering creators of a form of theatre combining dance and physical comedy, which they've been touring internationally to critical acclaim since their beginnings in 1998 Manchester. Just to give you a measure of their appeal, their work has been translated into French and Mandarin, and they've performed in venues as radically different as the Royal Opera House and Wembley Stadium, as well as pubs and village halls.

Their latest show, Cupid's Revenge, comes to The Place this autumn, and promises a radically new look at love in the 21st century.

Performed on a set designed by Will Holt (The Lost Thing), that has as its centrepiece a two-metre heart that has crashed to earth, Cupid's Revenge is loosely inspired by the Greek myth of Cupid and Pysche, but is billed as 'a look at love in the context of now, where it really is and what it really means.'

The show combines the spoken word, dance, physical theatre and comedy, and moves effortlessly from silliness to sometimes painful truths presented with gut-punching directness. To quote again from New Art Club's own definition, it's 'a joyful dancing outburst against the forces that masquerade as love,' propelled by an original score by the multi-award-winning Irish composer Gareth Williams.

At only 60 minutes, Cupid's Love promises to be a rollercoaster of a show, amusing and thought-provoking in equal measure, leading us yet again to ponder the infinite facets of love.
