Choreographer James Cousins takes the heroine of Shakespeare’s As You Like It on a journey of self-discovery in Rosalind, a contemporary dance reworking of the Bard’s comedy

Shakespeare’s delightful play features elaborate gender reversals and stresses the simultaneous pleasures and pains of being human. Now, over 400 years since it was written, James Cousins has created Rosalind to reflect upon how bewildering yet pleasurable life can be, while questioning what has changed in society.
Cousins sets the action in a sprawling modern metropolis – a city that is conservative by day and a wonderland by night – where his Rosalind embarks on a soul-searching quest for gender identity.
At the heart of this piece is a question: do women still need to adopt a stereotypical masculinity to find equality in our modern world?
A rising star of the British contemporary dance scene, James Cousins was described by The Guardian as “a talent to watch,” his choreographic language “freshly minted.”
Cousins is an alumnus of the London Contemporary Dance School. After graduation, he toured with Matthew Bourne’s hugely successful Swan Lake before turning his hand to dance-making. He won the inaugural New Adventures Choreographer Award in 2012. There followed a number of high-profile choreographic opportunities with the likes of Scottish Ballet and National Ballet of Chile, giving him the exposure to establish his own company in 2014.
Cousins created Rosalind last year in Seoul, in collaboration with South Korean dancers and artists. His novel production promises to take the headstrong character’s passion beyond words, to somewhere only movement can take us.
