Benjamin Grosvenor in Recital, Barbican Hall

Book ahead for this Benjamin Grosvenor Piano Recital: the Barbican hosts one of the best British pianists playing today.

Benjamin Grosvenor is undoubtedly one of the shining stars of the British piano scene - and one of the most important musical talents to have emerged for decades. Aged just 22, his career has been meteoric, with every new project prompting a cascade of praise from critics everywhere. This solo recital demonstrates the extent of his artistry, with a programme ranging from the sprightly dances of Rameau to Granados’ sultry Spanish stylings.

Four pieces by Chopin form the centerpiece of Grosvenor’s programme, a composer for whom Grosvenor has a particular affinity. Ranging from pathos to transcendence, his interpretations are characterized by a sense of poetry, revealing a wisdom that belies his young age.

Rameau’s set of Variations begins a set of three works connected by the Baroque: Bach's Chaconne in D minor sits alongside nineteenth-century Belgian composer César Franck, who looks back at the past in his majestic Prélude, choral et fugue. The recital is completed by the spicy harmonies and bewitching rhythms of three pieces from Granados’s great piano cycle, Goyescas. Inspired by the paintings of Francisco Goya, the music is equally full of rich colours and romantic subjects.

Despite his youth, Grosvenor has encouraged comparisons with the all-time piano greats. Technically assured and possessing a natural musicality, Grosvenor is known for his vivid colours and elegant phrases alike. The pianist breathes personality into every characterful performance, yet every detail is finely-wrought and sensitively shaded. Don’t miss the chance to see this brilliant musician at the top of his game; book now for this bold and wide-ranging programme.
