Bring the festive season at St James’s Piccadilly to a glittering finale and be in on the next big thing when Oxford Bach Soloists make their London debut. The aim of this elite Baroque ensemble is to perform over 12 years all the vocal works of prolific composer JS Bach.

Led by conductor Tom Hammond-Davies, the ensemble will be performing parts I,III and VI of Bach's Christmas Oratorio in an event that combines historical accuracy with artistic excellence. Soloists are tenor Nick Pritchard, (Evangelist), Hilary Cronin (soprano), Marta Fontanals-Simmons (alto) and Florian Störtz (bass).

Founded in 2017, the ensemble’s mission is to mount a cycle of performances in chronological order, programmed in real time, and in the context for which they were conceived, setting out to perform Bach’s works as he would have realised them with performers, instruments, and venues that echo the university and churches of Bach’s hometown of Leipzig.

Oxford Bach Soloists gives the next generation of aspiring singers the chance to develop their solo singing within the ensemble’s musical programme. Ten choral scholars hone their skills by taking on solos during concerts, and receive professional German language coaching. They also make up the core of the chorus.

And because we can never know all there is to know about this astonishing composer, this ensemble also aims to be a laboratory for current research, drawing on the knowledge of specialists in music, theology, history, and modern languages. It's a very classy outfit indeed, in short, and the audience on 6 Jan is in for an exceptionally musical experience.

Bach's Christmas Oratorio is sung in German, with English translations in the printed programme. Under-18s go free. Click here to book
