Prom 19: Relaxed Prom, Royal Albert Hall

Why should the classical composers have all the fun? The Relaxed Prom lets its hair down with pop and TV themes, and everyone can join in

Music gets the feet tapping and the pulse racing, and for those who like to show that, the first Relaxed Prom is here.

Perfect for families with small children, wriggly rellies and adults who just can’t keep still when the music takes them, this one-hour ride through classical, pop and TV favourites invites everyone to join in, every which way.

You’re made of stone if you don’t want to dance to Pharrell Williams’s Happy, and the Doctor Who theme is an outright invitation for tum-te-tum-te, woo-oo-oo responses, and that’s just what the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is hoping for.

Two presenters, the musician Andy Pidcock and conductor Grant Llewellyn, have 80 musicians on the platform – but they know there are plenty more in the auditorium. Sing or clap along – or if just letting it all wash over you is your thing, chill out in one of the designated spaces.

Tots, toddlers, adults of all abilities, those with sensory impairments, and parents and companions who will be able to unwind too are in for a treat. As the song says: ‘Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof…. Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth'.
