A legal suit that drags on and on; a woman in pursuit of eternal youth… The pungent themes of Janacek’s extraordinary opera The Makropulos Affair are coloured by the composer’s rich and characterful music in a concert performance of one of his greatest operas, sung in Czech.

Finnish soprano Karita Mattila, one-time Cardiff Singer of the World, whose performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as the unageing Emilia Marty (now 300 years young) was highly acclaimed, takes the role again with a largely Czech cast conducted by Jiri Belohlavek and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the men's voices of the BBC Singers.
