The violinist Thomas Zehetmair performs a rarely heard Violin Concerto as Schumann takes centre stage at the BBC Proms 2016

The story of the emergence of Schumann’s surpressed Violin Concerto is worthy of a novel, as the writer and librettist Jessica Duchen has recently recognised in her book Ghost Variations, to be published in July.

Now there is a chance to hear this mysterious and rarely performed piece, played by Thomas Zehetmair with the BBC Philharmonic under John Storgards. The programme also includes Sibelius’s Tempest prelude and Nielsen’s mighty Symphony No 5, his stirring evocation of good’s triumph over evil.
