New 'music on film' season, Curzon Summer of Sound
This summer, Curzon explores the rich history of sound in cinema. With a programme that runs the gamut from early silent film scores to contemporary pop biopics, the aptly-named Summer of Sound season attunes audiences to the music of film.
Roeg meets Bowie
A series of ‘weekenders’ forms the season’s backbone; running throughout July and into August, each directs its attention to a particular sonic field, be it ‘Mods and Rockers’ or ‘The Urban Beat.’ There’s much to be excited about. ‘Musician on Film – From Sound to Vision’ (Curzon Bloomsbury, 11-12 July) sees the screening of Nicholas Roeg’s Performance and the Man Who Fell to Earth – typically fantastical pieces and the respective silver screen debuts of Mick Jagger and David Bowie.
Wim Wenders
A week later, ‘More Than A Score: The Music of Wim Wenders’ (Curzon Bloomsbury, 17-19 July) accompanies the release of his new Sebastião Salgado documentary The Salt of the Earth and celebrates the German director’s collaboration with Ry Cooder, who starred in Buena Vista Social Club and whose yearning steel guitar proved the perfect complement to the desert expanses of Paris, Texas.
New releases
A host of new films are also on offer throughout the season, two of which take to the warm climes of California. Straight Outta Compton tells the story of gangsta rap originators N.W.A, while new Beach Boys movie Love and Mercy charts the tribulations of ‘60s pop icon Brian Wilson.
New Amy Winehouse documentary
Assuming pride of place in the programme though is AMY – Asif Kapadia’s keenly anticipated documentary about the life of the late Amy Winehouse (read our exclusive interview with Kapadia here). Combining rare archive footage, unheard material, and interviews with friends and family, the film has already received glowing reviews.
On July 3, the film’s opening night, Kapadia is to give a Q&A at Curzon Chelsea: an ideal start to a busy season. Click here to go to the Curzon website to see all the AMY screenings and events.
Other highlights from the season include films from the Curzon Curates back-catalogue, Cobain: Montage of Heck and Elliott Smith documentary Heaven Adores You. Plus our favourite new feminist Iranian Vampire romance, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.
