This May sees the release of director Thomas Vinterberg’s Far From the Madding Crowd, with Carey Mulligan taking the lead in Hardy’s celebrated tale of love and maturity. This is not, however, the first time that the novel has made its way to the silver screen; in 1967, director John Schlesinger (best known for the seminal Midnight Cowboy) released his own version of the late nineteenth century masterpiece.

Far From the Madding Crowd: Julie Christie
The fondly remembered classic has now been digitally restored, and opens in cinemas on March 13th. The iconic Julie Christie (Darling, Away From Her) stars as the lively farm-owner Bathsheba Everdene who, as the story unfolds, finds herself involved with three very different suitors. The actors who played opposite Julie Christie in Far From the Madding Crowd include Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates (and will be replaced in the Far From the Madding Crowd remake with the likes of Tom Sturridge, Matthias Schoenaerts and Michael Sheen). Beautifully shot in the English countryside, the film is a moving and enduring story that also has subtle points to make about gender and class equality. Far From The Madding Crowd is a piece of culture that belongs to the 1960s as much as to the 1870s.
