In this second attempt to show how life can continue to go on splendidly, director John Madden and screenwriter Ol Parker revisit the Marigold hotel’s owner Muriel (Maggie Smith) and her enthusiastic co-manager Sonny (Dev Patel).
Enjoying the hoteliers’ hard work are long-term guests Douglas (Billy Nighy), Evelyn (Judi Dench) and Madge (Celia Imrie), who have decided to spice up their retirement with a trip to India’s colourful tourist scene. This time around, the well-settled guests must navigate new relationships and trials, such as the hotel’s expansion.
Muriel and Sonny seek investment to develop a chain of Marigolds stretching across India, Douglas and Evelyn flirt around each other like butterflies and Madge is titillated by new guest Guy (Richard Gere) - a dishy American addition to the British slate.
