Jupiter Ascending

Current film reviews for Jupiter Ascending may be tepid, but this latest film out from Wachowski siblings of Matrix renown will undoubtedly entertain sci-fi junkies.

Jupiter Ascending
The Wachowskis' latest film in cinema now Jupiter Ascending is a self-proclaimed ‘space opera’ – a sci-fi sub-genre that refers to openly melodramatic and romantic space-sagas, often charting interplanetary wars. Who better, then, to frame the movie’s epic narrative than longtime collaborators the Wachowski siblings. Both Lana (hitherto Laurence) and Andy Wachowski are particularly well equipped to direct this ambitious movie: with past credits including the game-changing Matrix trilogy and the awe-inspiring Cloud Atlas, the pair have proved their expertise with larger-than-life stories and breathtaking special effects.
In the world of Jupiter Ascending, humans are but pawns in an intergalactic hierarchy whose overlords reside in the House of Abrasax. In fact, Earth is merely a laboratory under the administration of aliens. These aliens are waiting for human evolution to reach a state of Darwinian perfection, at which point the specimens may be harvested for a valuable serum. But if that seems a lot to chew on, matters are complicated when the matriarch of Abrassax dies, leaving the kingdom wondering who might fill this precarious power vacuum.
Enter Jupiter Jones, played by Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Ted), whose genetic make-up casts her as the true heir to the throne. Despite living amongst humans, Jupiter’s destiny extends beyond Earth and sent to guide her through this journey is interplanetary warrior Caine Wise, played by Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher, White House Down). So ensues a series of action-packed sequences to keep audiences glued to their seats. And if the Matrix trilogy was anything to go by, you won’t need to be a sci-fi nut to get the most out of this epic blockbuster.
Jupiter Ascending movie UK release date: 6th February.
