Trash

The latest from Stephen Daldry: Trash. Richard Curtis writes the screenplay for new Brazilian film out in cinemas, Trash, a vibrant picture of life in the slums.

Trash
In Stephen Daldry’s new release Trash, three Brazilian street kids uncover a secret at a rubbish dump that leads them to the heart of a political conspiracy. Although it’s not the most daring of premises, Brazil’s latest film, released internationally, charmed critics at last year’s Rome Film Festival, striking an endearing balance between gentle social commentary, lively cinematography and human warmth that Daldry first showcased with Billy Elliot. Of movies coming soon to UK cinemas, this is likely to strike a chord with Slumdog fans.
The film benefits from a screenplay by Rom-Com stalwart Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Notting Hill), bold performances from its teenage leads (Rickson Tevez, Gabriel Weinstein, Eduardo Luis), and added Hollywood firepower from Martin Sheen (The Departed) and Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). Playing at independent cinemas in London from Friday 30th January, Trash film reviews have been a mixed bag but this latest cinema release will undoubtedly showcase a lot of Brazilian spirit.
A bustling, lively film set against the backdrop of the Rio de Janeiro favelas, most of the dialogue is in Portuguese with subtitles. Trash is a genuinely international production with a sense of social justice at its heart, which promises to be one of the most affirmative films of 2015.
