We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.
If the Michael Grandage Company has failed to penetrate your consciousness this year, you have almost certainly been living under a rock, most likely in the desert. Culture Whisper urges you to emerge and hurry back to London.
The Michael Grandage Company was set up in 2011, by the formidable director from which it gains its namesake and James Bierman, formerly the Executive Producer of the Donmar Warehouse. The concept of the company is simple, and brilliant: reach out to and inspire a new generation of theatregoers with eclectic, exciting plays(all directed by Grandage), superb actors (including Judi Dench, Ben Whishaw, and Sheridan Smith) and over 100,000 tickets going on sale for £10.
From November to February 2014, Jude Law will be performing as the title character in Shakespeare’s Henry V, the final production of the Michael Grandage Company’s Season of Five Plays. Grandage directed Law four years ago, in the Wyndham’s critically acclaimed production of Hamlet: a collaboration so compelling, so winning, it is being revived for the public.
Henry V is one of Shakespeare’s most complex works. A fraught exploration of the morality of war, duty, and a nation in crisis. It is a bitter truth that, in 2013, these themes and fears are still potent and real; Henry V is a story as important now as it was in 1599. It will be thrilling to see what the visionary Grandage makes of it.
