Irish playwright Enda Walsh (Ballyturk, Misterman) is one of the most prolific and diverse theatrical writers of our time; in the past decade he has brought around twenty productions to the London stage, almost always directed by himself. It was only a matter of time before he expanded onto the operatic stage.

Want to know more about the Royal Opera's Autumn 2015 season?

The Last Hotel, written in collaboration with countryman composer Donnacha Dennehy (The Hunger, Stainless Staining), brings Walsh’s vision to the Royal Opera’s Linbury Studio. The story, which promises grisly murder, will track the meeting of a married couple, a young woman and a cleaner in a dank, blood-stained hotel. It promises to be a visceral psychological thriller that pauses to examine themes of duty and guilt. Andre de Ridder will conduct the Crash Ensemble, Dublin-based and co-founded by Dennehy himself.
Both artists are known for their concern with the debris of Ireland’s history, whether through plumbing national psychology or repurposing traditional music, so this should be a fitting match.

    ROYAL OPERA BOOKING

The Royal Opera House's Autumn 2015 season includes a trio of works based on Orpheus, several specifically commissioned new works and Mozart, Bizet and Strauss revivals. General booking opens 9am on July 14th. Before that date, however, there are five advance releases for the five tiers of supporters, from Premium 2 on June 2nd to plain old Friends on June 17th. This is a significant margin - although few productions are likely to sell out before general booking, many of the best seats will be taken. If you are not a friend (or else the friend of a friend), be sure to act quickly when tickets become available.

  • Parsons

Parsons is a thoroughly old-fashioned spot, with a maroon-tiled facade, a white tiled interior and antique mirrors on which are written their daily changing selection of fresh whole fish which make up most of the mains. We love it.

Cora Pearl, the second restaurant from the team behind Kitty Fisher's, takes its name from the infamous 19th-century French courtesan. The menu, consisting of both French and British influenced cuisine, is deceptively simple, with cheese and ham toasties, fish stew, and chocolate ganache on offer.
