Electronic duo Mount Kimbie have had quite the year. In March, they followed up their acclaimed debut album with second effort Cold Spring Fault Less Youth. Immediately starting a worldwide promotional tour (which they’re bringing home to Camden’s KOKO in mid-November), the accolades started rolling in, and didn’t stop. The album ‘seeps with a distant brilliance,’ according to Clash magazine.‘ Cerebral and arresting,’ said electronic dance bible Mixmag . ‘Ruthless in their pursuit of greatness' said NME.
‘Ruthless’ might not seem like the right adjective at first listen. Dominic Maker and Kai Campos make subdued, truncated tracks, composed of twitchy instrumentals and random noises they’ve recorded. But running through their music is the endless thrum of the bass; it’s quiet yet insistent. And it’s characteristic: these South Londoners emerged at the same time as their peers in ‘post-dubstep’ James Blake and SBTRKT, DJs celebrated for their inventive use of bass tones.
While they’ve had less acclaim than whiz-steppers Blake or SBTRKT, Mount Kimbie are just as worthy of your time. It makes for hypnotic dance music. It’s this organic, experimental approach to their music which will be showcased on November 14 at the legendary Camden venue KOKO.
The best thing about the duo is that they’re not just glorified DJs. The duo are capable of reproducing their bevy of sounds with live instrumentation. They play guitar, bass, keyboards, drum pads, samplers, snares, cymbals- enough instruments to kit-out a generously sized band. Inevitably, computers are involved, but we assure you: will be a stunning show.
