You know the feeling, spring has sprung, summer is on the way and you finally feel like getting up and going outdoors. But, if you don't have your own garden, which, let's face it, most of us in London don't, the hankering for something cosy and full of greenery can get pretty strong this time of year, we're on the hunt for nice bars in London with a view, and there's plenty on offer.
That's where the cocktail gardener Lottie Muir and co come in. They'll be spending their Saturdays at the Brunel Museum in Rotherhite this summer.
Brunel Museum, Midnight Apothecary
The museum is located atop one of the entrances to the Thames Tunnel, where Lottie is the first to turn the scrubby wasteland into a stunning garden – which not only looks better, but has also provided endless entertainment in the form of cleverly crafted cocktails and infusions galore. Muir is constantly coming up with new ideas – expect the likes of Rhubarb Streisands, hedgerow sours and many many syrups infused with favours from lavender to gorse.
The Thames Tunnel
And what's more's that it's tucked away in an oasis in London. You'll get to stand around a campfire, watch the sun set over the Thames and of course sample the amazing cocktails. The first tunnel to be built underneath a river, the Thames Tunnel opened in 1843 and is an incredible feat of engineering, even by today's standards, and the museum is named after the man who completed it, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
£5 buys you entry into the Brunel Museum, marshmallows to toast over the fire, and a trip into the underground shaft (should you want to, but we recommend it!) along with giant flares and hurricane lamps. What's more, it's for a good cause: the money goes straight back into the museum to improve access to the shaft and create an entrance fitting to the history of the place.
Visitors are also invited to sample Greek souvlaki from Should be Souvlaki, to wash down all the cocktails. All in all a surefire way to enjoy the summer sun on a Saturday afternoon.
