A Village Summer Fête in London

The Marylebone Summer Fayre returns this year to join the host of food fairs 2015 and summer fêtes London has on offer, and with it a pastoral paradise comes to central London.

Providing everything you expect from a traditional village fête – bunting, tombolas, children’s activities, craft stalls and a farmers’ market – it's one of the best things to do in London with kids this June. And, in one of the capital’s most desirable neighbourhoods, The Marylebone Summer Fayre makes for the perfect family day out: one of the best summer fête ideas we've seen in years.

De Walden Estate, Marylebone, London

For eleven years the Howard De Walden Estate has been hosting this Midsummer madness, and the Fayre has been getting bigger and better year by year, drawing on the increasingly diverse local community to create a wonderfully varied event. In addition to its celebration of the area, and being a brilliant day out, a slice of bucolic splendour in The Big Smoke, of all events in London this weekend this one makes for a huge fundraiser.

This year’s charity partner is Kids Company, which works to provide opportunities and support for vulnerable children. Free things to do in London this weekend are hardly likely to be so rewarding.

Pop up cinema meets summer street festival

This year also marks a first in the history of the event. On Saturday 27th June Paddington Gardens will warm up the locals and culture vultures alike with an evening of music, cinema, food and drink. They will be collaborating with Nomad Cinema, screening the much loved Coen Brothers Odyssey and American epic O Brother Where art Thou?

With acoustic music before and a festival bar, the showcase will be the perfect way to warm up for the festivities the following day.

Street food

In addition to May Poles and Morris Dancers, Tombolas and tomfoolery on Sunday 28th June the Marylebone Summer Fayre will host some of London’s best independent food stalls, bringing the classy diversity of the metropolitan to the classic revelry of the bucolic.

The Real Greek will be grilling delicious fresh burgers, dripping in tzatziki and dressed with salad so ornamental and dainty it could adorn a Grecian bust, while Jamon Jamon bring their sizzling paella.

For the traditionally minded, Simply Strawberries will be doling out punnets of juicy English strawberries and cream, while a hog roast (The Jolly Hog) will be providing the crackling.

A delightfully diverse take on the traditionally summer fete, the Marylebone Summer Fayre is London’s best kept secret. If you're at a loss for things to do in London this Sunday, make sure you kick off the Great British Summer in style.

  • Roux at The Landau

Luxurious yet laidback dining in a hotel without any of the pomp and ceremony is still a rare find. Roux at The Landau just north of Oxford Circus, within the decidedly grand The Langham, has nailed it. Using French cooking techniques, the talented chefs serve up gloriously simple dishes in an elegant setting that has recently been re-styled by David Collins Studio.
