It may not exactly be situated in a field, and it might span now span more than a single day, but Field Day has stayed admirably true to its initial aims. It is not the festival for those who crave bubblegum pop stars and chart EDM, but if you want to discover the best in contemporary alternative and electronic music there can be few better places. Held, as ever, in the delightful Victoria Park – the Hyde Park of the East – the first wave of acts has already been announced, and there’s much to look forward to.

Heading up Saturday's bill is none other than James Blake whose forthcoming album Radio Silence is one of most anticipated records of 2016. Other highlights include the scintillating rap-highlife fusion of Ata Kak, psychedelic folk care of Cass McCombs, experimentalism courtesy of Dean Blunt and indie rock from the likes of critical favourites Deerhunter and Youth Lagoon.

Sunday's headliner is the singular PJ Harvey, who also makes her return this year with The Hope Six Demolition Project. Sharing the bill are enduring dream-poppers Beach House, baritone balladeer John Grant, and icy Swedish synth-wielder Molly Nilsson.

Whatever end of the indie spectrum you fall on, Field Day 2016 is bound to be one to remember.
