Unlike many in the industry McQueen didn't take the usual path to stardom via Central St Martins school of art. Instead, he cut his teeth on Savile Row at Gieves & Hawkes, where he reportedly once embroidered a suit for the Prince of Wales with the words "I am a c**t" (in the lining). He did however complete an MA at St Martins some years later, and his entire degree show was bought, in 1991, by icon Isabella Blow.
McQueen drove innovation in fashion, pioneering such trends as the 'bumster', a look that dominated the late nineties. In spite of his phenomenal talent, McQueen passed away in 2010 aged only 40, unconfirmed reports suggest it was suicide.
Since then the brand has continued to produce exciting designers under the steady hand of Sarah Burton, who designed Kate Middleton's wedding dress in 2011.
