And this year, when in-person shopping is unlikely and retailers have relied heavily on discounts to keep their businesses afloat, it's set to be a bigger event than ever. Over-commercialised con or canny way to make your present budget go further? Hard to tell.
Some British brands and retailers have yet to accept the custom completely and instead have sneaky sales that eschew the Black Friday label altogether (hello Christmas Comes Early at Selfridges) while others pursue 'thoughtful Friday' in a bid to bring balance and give back.

Black Friday Fashion Savings
Net-a-Porter is a giant among fashion retailers, so expect high demand now that its Black Friday sale has launched in the UK, with up to 50% off a huge range of high-fashion clothing, streetwear and accessories.
Selfridges avoids the Black Friday hype altogether, opting to create their own holiday, Christmas Comes Early, with up to 20% off a selection of womenswear, menswear, kids' clothes and toys, homewares and tech. Shop the site and simply use promo code 'SELFCCE' at checkout.
Starting early and running into the New Year, Farfetch takes the time pressure out of Black Friday sale shopping this year. Shop with up to 50% off fashion for men and women until 31 January 2021.
While an official Black Friday sale is yet to be announced, the sale section of Matchesfashion.com currently has plenty of love-forever designer fashion pieces with discounts of up to 80%.
The Parisian online emporium is offering 20% off with code BLACKFRIDAY20 on a minimum spend of £250, and 25% off full-price stock with code BLACKFRIDAY25, until Tuesday 1 December.
Browns, the go-to site for edgier designs, is yet to announce its Black Friday promotion. Last year it ran a Cyber Week with 20% off a selection of pieces, starting from 26 November, so expect similar this year.
Again, Liberty doesn't officially do Black Friday. Instead, it's once again hosting The Event Before Christmas for a limited time, with up to 30% off fashion, childrenswear and home with 15% off beauty.
Fenwick is offering a Christmas Warm-Up, with discounts of 20% across fashion and home, 15% off beauty and 10% off electricals, until Sunday 29 November.
Premium high-street favourite Whistles (gotta love those barrel-leg jeans,) is running a 25% discount on full-price items until Monday 30 November.
Details of the 2020 promo are yet to be released but last year Arket threw itself into 'colourweek', a multi-day celebration in the week running up to the shopping shakedown. The sale offered 20% off a selection of items from menswear, womenswear, home and childrenswear with a new colour added each day.
