Autumn/winter 2019 coat trends
New coat trends are important on these shores, so do your homework and invest early
On the prowl
From left to right: Versace; Ports 1961; Faux fur coat £300 Stand Studio; Utility jacket £89, & Other Stories
Leopard print is perhaps the most powerful of the autumn/winter 19 trends, and there's a strong case for investing in outerwear in the striking pattern. Opt for fuzzy faux fur and you'll add a touch of kitsch glamour to even the most boring of outfits.
From left to right: Dior; Givenchy; Gingham trench £49.50, Marks & Spencer; Check blazer £345, Sandro
Channel the borrowed-from-the-boys look in classic menswear shapes and tailoring fabrics. Let's be realistic a waterproof coat like this trench will be one of the best investments you can buy as long as you remember your umbrella. Winter woolens check in with this trend too - look for plaids and tartans to keep the chill at bay.
Warm and fuzzies
From left: Celine; Chloe; Reversible shearling coat £999, Massimo Dutti; Faux fur jacket £199, Hobbs
The coldest days call for the decadence of a fuzzy coat, be it faux fur or sheepskin. Channel the Seventies vibes of the season in a caramel shade paired with tan leather boots, sunglasses and flowing locks. Avoid the rain in this one - the look you're going for is bohemian rather than bedraggled.
From left to right: Dries Van Noten; Chanel; Palm-printed puffa £120, Studio by Preen; Quilted coat £89, Arket
By now we've all got on board with a padded jacket, and while the classic black version is going nowhere it can't hurt to have a bit of fun with one of the most practical items in your wardrobe too. Look for printed versions and vibrant colours to add some cheer while keeping the chill out this winter.
From left: Marc Jacobs; Miu Miu; Faux shearling cape £420, Maje; Tuxedo cape £59.99, Zara
Sold on the exaggerated sleeve trend but not sure how to make it work for winter? Then this is the coat trend for you. The right cape is a statement piece all on its own, but will look even better when it allows a peek at the ruffle-trimmed and bow-bedecked blouses that are so hot right now.
